AIF Online I-Trans Nord Pas de Calais Picardie

A network of compagnies and research

The railroad know-how is well- known: the sector employs 10 000 people of which 4500 work on construction, upkeep and maintenance in 150 companies in the Nord-Pas de Calais region ; 3000 people work in 4 specialised companies and for numerous sub-contractors in Picardy.  The three first integrators in the world work with a large number of suppliers, sub-contractors and service providers in order to work on the development of new railroad material.

The i-trans hub brings together research labs and training centres and represents some 400 000 jobs. It also develops links with key national players . The NORTHERN FRANCE RAIL cluster takes this networking even further in so far as it includes, for example, railroad operators and infrastructure administrators such as Eurotunnel, RFF or the French Railways  ( SNCF) ... It also develops links with organisations such as CERTIFER, the French Railway Safety Authority (EPSF) and the European Railway Agency.

Historical know-how

Railroad history follows that of coal with the first railway built in 1838 to remove the ore extracted near Valenciennes. In 1846 the Halette workshops in Arras made improvements to a Stephenson engine bought in England for the Northern network. The Fives-Lille built locomotives for France and for the export market as early as 1861.

The industry itself developed well before the end of the century : Cail developed the Stephenson and Crampton patents in Denain. ANF industries sprung up in Blanc Misseron from 1882 onwards, the Franco-Belge company was set up in Raismes in 1884. Let’s not forget either Arbel and Fauvet-Girel.

History, innovation, networks....

In the North of France the railroad epic started up in the second half of the 19th century. As time passed the industry developed its ability to manufacture, innovate and adapt to the increasing needs of transportation of goods , passengers and sometimes soldiers.

Armed conflict just like economic wars leads to new challenges and awareness-raising.Globalisation which started at the end of the 20thcentury brought with it sustainable development and new possible developments for the railroad transport.

A european territory with a worldwide perspective

With high speed trains, the famous TGV, the NORTHERN FRANCE RAIL territory can accommodate bogies from all over Europe : the hub in Lille already services Paris, London, Brussels et in the near future Amsterdam, Cologne, Berlin and countries in Eastern Europe.
The Nord – Pas de Calais and Picardy regions at the heart of Europe both from a geographical and economic point of view make it possible for the three large companies      ( Bombardier Transport, Alstom Transport and Siemens Transportations Systems) together with a large number of SMEs and sub-contractors to move into the export market : between 35 and 40% of France’s railroad production is manufactured here.

Innovation generator

From the famous Pacific 231 to the automated underground the Val, the regional manufacturers have always had an ability to innovate. On the 28th March 1955 an electric locomotive the CC 107 made by Fives-Lille beat the world railway speed record at 331 km/h : the first record made by the TGV was “only” 380 km/h in 1981 !
With no turning back possible from globalisation, the fact that the railroad operating market is opening up and the challenges of sustainable development as laid out in the Grenellle Environment paper innovation is crucial today : the worldwide level competitive hub i-trans is developing thanks to the support from the state and the Nord-Pas de Calais and Picardy regional councils . In three years some 78 research, innovation and training projects have been launched.
